Military has always been one of the main drivers of technological improvement especially during the war. The status of timing instruments has been infinitely raised for the accuracy was required during fighting. Therefore, many luxury watches we wear today were originally created to serve the military. Today I will introduce two brand’s history of military timepieces.
At the beginning of 20th century, Panerai provided the instruments with high precision to Italy Royal Navy. However, until the late 1930s, the brand had crated the famous Radiomir watches for Italy fighting divers. Radiomir is the name of the radium-based fluorescence on the dial. These timepieces had been designed with large size and welded linear lugs to contain the ultra long waterproof strap. The key features of the earlier 47 mm Panerai Radiomir fake watch were large, clear, luminescent and waterproof, which have been inherited by the modern Panerai.
IWC Big Pilots Heritage
In 1936, IWC released a pilot special edition to serve the pilots of civic flight, laying the foundation for the brand’s long history of aviation timepieces. It created a “guide” watch with military standard for German air force which featured an oversized case, of which the diameter was 55 mm. The military wristwatch was especially designed for fighter pilots, and the hug crown allowed the pilots to operate it conveniently. The 55 mm accurate copy IWC Big Pilots watches had been manufactured 1000 pieces at that time.
